| In 13th century England there was a tax on every pint of ale drunk in licensed city taverns. This tax was called a "Scot." Rather than pay the tax, avid drinkers would go to the village pubs and drink "Scot Free." This term is still used today to describe situations where a rule is avoided or bypassed. |
